Guided visit of the historical town centre of Lunel

Enter the heart of Lunel history, its intimacy and mysteries. The guided visit of the historical town centre reveals all its secrets in the bend of an alley and in the course of the explanations.

It is difficult to date the birth of Lunel with precision due to its creation on a swampy region. The thing we are sure of is that in 888, Lunel was erected as a barony and grouped together 13 villages. At the beginning of the year 1000, it belonged to Bernard of Anduze, baron of Sauve who gave it to the Gaucelm family, lords of Lunel. But when Rosselin Gaucelm died, Lunel was left without a male heir. At that time, a rich town with numerous salt storehouses, Lunel was taken over by the King of France ...

The history of the town was marked by an important jewish community, most probably originating from Spain but also by the Templar's, the Carmelites, the Capuchins and the Franciscans who also contributed to the history of this town.
